Helen Freeman
Since coming to Capital High School nine years
ago, life has been extremely busy for Helen Freeman, the Theatre Instructor.
Not only do her duties involve teaching six periods a day, but they also
involve directing and producing the shows.
So far the theatre has produced anywhere from five to nine shows per
year – memorable productions such as Oklahoma, The Wizard of Oz,
Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs and many more.
This past year Capital High School won the Best Technical School in the
State of West Virginia and has held this prestigious title for the past twelve
years out
of fourteen years of Capital’s existence. In
addition, the play, Story Theatre, was named best play in the State for
2001 along with Addict which won best competition piece for 2003. Along with it’s state
titles, Capital High School has also been cited by Redbook Magazine as
one of the top ten schools in the country in the area of Performing Arts.
Mrs. Freeman has a B.A. in Speech and Language Pathology, an M.A. in
Communications and Theatre and a certification in Speech and Theatre from
Marshall University. In
addition to her academic credentials, she has extensive experience in theatre,
including directing several plays for Kanawha Players, Children’s Theatre of
Charleston, Musical Arts Guild of Huntington and Huntington Outdoor Theatre,
which was founded eight years ago by Helen Freeman and her long time friend,
Patti Shaver. This company is dedicated to producing summer Musical theater
in Huntington’s Ritter Park Amphitheater.
