Learning-Focused Essential Questions Rubric

 

  Meets or Exceeds Expectations Almost There, Needs Fine Tuning New At It, or Inadequate Response
Student Awareness Questions are given to students prior to the class. Teacher makes sure students understand the question and indicates they will be used to summarize the lesson. Questions are posted sequentially for the entire unit as they are taught. At end of unit, students see all questions. Questions are made available at beginning of class but without discussion. Students are asked to think about a response. Questions are postedin some manner, but usually only for the current lesson. Questions randomly posted or stated but not discussed. Students are not aware they will be used in any way during or after class.
Addresses Big Idea and Used As An Instructional Tool Questions clearly focus on the big ideas of the lesson. Questions used to introduce and summarize student learning. Questions have a relationship to big ideas, but the teacher explicitly makes the connectiuon only at beginning of lesson. Wuestions may have relationship to big ideas but are not shared with students. Teacher tells students what the question is on most days. There is no apparent connection to student learning.
Assessment Tool Teacher uses the questions to assess student learning at end of lesson. Questions are used throughout the lesson to gather data on student learning. Teacher may use questions to assess student learning, but student data is gathered only poart of the time. Students are asked to respond to questions infrequently. Either very little data is collected and only in an informal manner or no data is collected.
