CAPITAL HIGH SCHOOL DANCE CODE

This dance code was developed utilizing the input of students, teachers, parents, counselors and administrators. All were solicited/asked for their advice. What follows is a condensed, simplified compilation of the suggestions they made. (C.H.G.)

Dance participants are reminded that school dances are school-sponsored activities and appropriate behavior and conduct is expected. Suspension from school, as well as exclusion from upcoming dances and or extra curricular activities, including the Prom and future dances, may be assigned as consequences for committing disciplinary infractions in this category.

School rules, policies, and law, apply at school-sponsored events for both students and guests (whether guests are students or not).

Violations will result in consequences, which may include detention, suspension, and in some cases, expulsion as well as In-School Suspension.
Non-student violators may be subject to arrest and prosecution.
The purpose of the following guidelines is to provide students and guests with information that will promote an appropriate, safe, orderly, socially acceptable, and, enjoyable environment at school dances.

Students and their guests are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with communicated expectations for appropriate dance behavior and conduct.
The following are specifically prohibited at school-sponsored dances:

• Students must refrain from excessive demonstrations of affection such as deep kissing and the inappropriate touching (fondling) of body parts with the hands.
• No lewd behavior will be permitted.
• Students must refrain from dance moves that may be considered sexually provocative or moves that simulate sexual activity.
• More specifically, “grinding”, “bumping”, “humping”, “hunching”, “goosing”, or sexually explicit dancing such as “freaking”, or “dirty dancing” are all prohibited.

• Students must refrain from dancing in either pairs or groups that would encourage or promote unacceptable dance behavior.
• Any dancing which may result in disruption or injury such as “slamming” or “moshing” is prohibited.
• Students are expected to wear appropriate attire - clothing that is appropriate for a particular dance or dance theme. Formal dances, obviously, present a higher expectation for dress.
• Students should refrain from wearing inappropriate or provocative attire (i.e., no excessively low or plunging necklines or short hemlines, sheer tops, thigh-high slit seams; baseball hats, tank tops, or undershirts/t-shirts). Students should maintain that appearance throughout the dance; removing jackets, ties, and shoes is acceptable.
• Shirts must be worn at all times (no undershirts).
