English 12 Honors Syllabus

Course Description:

            Senior English presents a chronological survey of British and World literature often referred to as the “classics”, beginning with the epic,  Beowulf, continuing with The Canterbury Tales,  King Arthur legends, Irish mythology, The Decameron and then several Shakespearean plays.  Additionally grammar, writing, and speaking skills are reinforced throughout the year.  There will also be a minimum of four novels studied.

 

Course Objectives:

*          To follow the Honors Course Requirements, the CSO’s, and all other  requirements of the West Virginia Department of Education

*          To read, analyze, and critically discuss selected works of literature.

*          To write and speak grammatically and effectively for a variety of purposes, audiences, and occasions. 

*          To develop more effective and better vocabulary.

*          To access, process, and organize researched information from a variety of printed and computerized sources and to use the Internet as a research tool.

*          To work cooperatively in small groups.

*          To recognize literary genres and techniques, such as nonfiction, poetry, novel, and drama

 

Textbooks and Materials Required:

            In class the Kanawha County adopted textbooks, both current and past ones, will be used.  Students need paper, pencils, and pens for classroom assignments and occasionally may need to purchase a novel. Guest speakers and cultural events will supplement our study in English 12.  There is a one time $2.00 lab fee charged to offset the expenses of computer printer ink cartridges and disks.

 

KCS Grade Scale:  93-100% A,    85-93% B,   75-85%  C,   65-74%  D

            Grades will come from in class assignments, homework, quizzes, tests, special assignments, class participation and oral presentations, just to name a few.  Good attendance and punctuality is necessary for success in this class.  Tardies and unexcused absences affect the quality of learning and the students’ grades.  All make up work is due within a reasonable and realistic timeframe.  Makeup work after ten absences is done in after school makeup sessions. All other practices and policies of Capital High School and Kanawha County Schools will be followed in this class.
