Welcome to the Applied Arts Department of Capital High School

Hello!  It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Applied Arts Department of Capital High School.  I am the department head, Ann Stowers.  I have been the department head for four years.  Our philosophy as the Capital High School Arts Department is to develop and enhance life skills necessary to be productive citizens in the 21st Century.  This is achieved through a multidisciplinary approach to teaching life skills and healthy living.  Students will learn to appreciate a healthful lifestyle and be given opportunities for practical application.

Mrs. Myers (Physical Education) is coordinator of the ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) program.  With the childhood obesity rate rising so rapidly and the health consequences attached to obesity we hope to teach our students the importance of movement and hopefully encourage their participation in physical activity throughout their lives.

Mrs. Martin’s students are planning a “virtual” bowl game trip which teaches students how to plan a trip, plan the route, book a hotel room, buy tickets, and budget for all necessities.

Mrs. Ruth Miller’s Child Development students are researching the cost of raising a child from birth to age eighteen.  In this class, the students learn the realities and difficulties of becoming a parent and the importance of waiting until you have the financial and maturation to become a parent.

These are just a few of the important life lessons going on in the Applied Arts Department.  Watch your Capital High newsletters and this website for more important lessons being taught by the Applied Arts teachers.
