Welcome to the Business Department of Capital High School

In the Business department one of our main classes is Business Computer Applications.  In this course students use Microsoft Office 2007.  Students begin with Microsoft Word.  With this program students can develop many types of documents including flyers, letters, memos, resumes, reports, fax cover sheets, mailing labels, and newsletters.  In addition students are taught the MLA documentation style for research papers which aids them when they are asked to compose a research in their classes.  Finally students create a cover letter and a resume.  This chapter is helpful in preparing students for the world of work.  In Microsoft Excel students learn how to create a worksheet with a chart.  Also students learn how to use formulas and the proper way to display the formulas on the screen.

The third program used is Microsoft Access where students create databases used to store information.  Students can store information such as family names, address, and phone numbers.  The final program in Microsoft Office is PowerPoint.  In PowerPoint students learn to create and edit a presentation as well as create a presentation with illustrations and shapes.  Here at Capital we also offer an Advanced Business Computer Applications class in which students learn to create a document with a title page, table, chart, and a watermark.  Students also learn how to create a newsletter.  In Excel students are exposed to Amortizations schedules and work with multiple worksheets.  In access students create reports and forms.  In PowerPoint students create presentations with custom backgrounds and SmartArt diagrams.

At Capital we also offer Accounting, Introduction to Business, and Sports Marketing.  In Accounting, students learn the accounting process for a service business organized as a proprietorship during the first semester then later in the year will learn the process for a merchandising business organized as a partnership. They learn about the Accounting Equation, analyzing transactions, recording them into a general journal and posting them. Most importantly, students learn how to write checks, balance a statement, and the many services that banks provide.

The Sports Marketing class at CHS explores the intriguing world of sports and entertainment from the perspective of marketing. The students participate in projects such as designing new cereal boxes with their favorite sports figures and creating sports games for sale. They have many guest speakers like The Director of Marketing from the WV Power who gave a presentation about sports advertising costs and sponsorships to the class.  The class took a Field Trip to WV Radio Broadcasting Corporation on Virginia Street and a sportscaster from ESPN made an appearance to talk about his career in broadcasting. So, as you can see, many exciting things are happening in the Business Department at CHS!
