Welcome to the Fine Arts Department of Capital High School

As the Magnet Arts high school, Capital High School is a comprehensive high school and a performing and visual arts center. Training in performing or visual arts allows students to explore the demands of an artistic career. A rigorous academic program offers all courses required for West Virginia high school graduation. A range of honors and advanced placement courses are provided, as well as the opportunity to compete in major academic and arts competitions.
All arts students have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary arts activities. Students have frequent opportunities to work with visiting artists from each of the disciplines and to participate in related master classes, productions, exhibits, and performances. The school maintains a full schedule of performances and exhibits in each arts area, as well as participating in community arts efforts and local, state, and national arts competitions. Many students are able to participate in foreign travel, special arts programs and professional performances groups during the summer. Capital High School has produced many successful professional artists serving in the many varied aspects of the arts.
As afore mentioned, we are not only creating producers of the arts but we are creating consumers of the arts as well. This supports the Capital High School mission statement in that we want to develop and nurture a community of learners who can live as productive, thoughtful citizens in the 21st century
Two years ago, Capital High School was selected as one of the four high school test sites to produce The Phantom of the Opera. It was the performance opportunity of a lifetime for all of us here at Capital High School. We do sincerely appreciate having had the opportunity to utilize this marvelous vehicle to transport us closer toward realizing our mission and goals as a comprehensive, 21st Century High School.
